Donor privacy

We do not sell, rent, trade, or share our donor list with any other organization, ever. Your information is used to process your gift, send your receipt, honor your instructions, and, if you have agreed, keep you informed about our work. That is the whole list. You can ask us to stop contacting you at any time and we will. Our full privacy policy has more detail.

Receipts

Every online gift receives an emailed receipt immediately. Gifts by check receive a mailed or emailed receipt within two weeks of deposit. Receipts state the amount, the date, whether any goods or services were provided in return (normally none), and our EIN, 41-2684012. Monthly donors also receive a year-end statement in January summarizing the prior year's gifts. If you lose a receipt, email us and we will resend it.

Refunds

Gifts to a charity are generally not refundable, but mistakes happen and we would rather fix them than keep a gift you did not intend to make. If you gave the wrong amount, gave twice, meant to give once instead of monthly, or otherwise gave in error, email [email protected] within 30 days of the gift and we will refund it in full to the original payment method. Refunds take 5–10 business days to appear, depending on your bank. Requests after 30 days are considered case by case. If a refund is issued, the original receipt is void for tax purposes.

Recurring gifts

Monthly gifts repeat on the same calendar day each month until you stop them. You can change the amount, pause, or cancel at any time using the link in your receipt email or by emailing us; changes made by email are completed the same business day. We will notify you before any change to how recurring gifts are processed. If a card on file expires or is declined, we will email you once; we will not attempt to charge a different card without your instruction.

Restricted gifts

If you designate your gift to a specific program (for example, care at the Health Center, listening conversations, or education), we record that restriction, track the funds separately, and spend them only on that program. If the program you chose becomes fully funded or is discontinued, we will contact you to ask how you would like the gift redirected. If we cannot reach you within 60 days after a reasonable effort, the board may redirect the gift to the most similar purpose. Gifts without a designation go to our general fund, which the board directs to wherever the need is greatest.

What we accept

We gladly accept gifts of cash, checks, credit and debit cards, bank transfers, grants from donor-advised funds, publicly traded securities, and employer matching gifts. Gifts of real estate, closely held business interests, cryptocurrency, life insurance, or in-kind goods and services are considered individually by the board; please contact us before making such a gift. We reserve the right to decline any gift that would be inconsistent with our mission, would create an unacceptable liability or cost, or comes with conditions we cannot honor. We do not provide tax or legal advice; please consult your own advisor.

Recognition

We do not publish donor names or amounts. If you would like to be recognized publicly, tell us and we will do so exactly as you specify. Anonymous is our default.

Donor bill of rights

We follow the principles of the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and other leading nonprofit organizations. In plain terms, you have the right to:

  • Know our mission, how we intend to use your gift, and whether we can use it effectively for that purpose.
  • Know who serves on our board and expect them to exercise prudent judgment.
  • See our most recent financial statements and Form 990.
  • Be assured your gift is used for the purpose for which it was given.
  • Receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition, or none if you prefer.
  • Have your information handled with respect and confidentiality.
  • Expect that everyone representing us is honest and forthright.
  • Know whether the person asking you for a gift is a volunteer, an employee, or a hired solicitor. (Ours are volunteers; we do not use paid solicitors.)
  • Be removed from any mailing list on request.
  • Ask questions and receive prompt, truthful answers.
